Beethams Gardens Community Profile

Beetham Gardens  is located in West Trinidad and is bordered on the North by the Eastern Main Road; on the South by the Caroni River; to the East by a Concrete drain; thence along Beetham Highway; 16th St Main St; a ravine then to Priority Bus Route; thence along PTSC Prop. Boundary; Beetham Highway thence into and along Black River; and to the West by the Sea Coast; a ravine along overpass (City Boundary); Eastern Main Rd; Main St; 3rd St; Beetham Highway; thence into and along a ravine to Priority Bus Route; CGA Property Boundary to Eastern Main Rd.   The community is comprised of 933 dwelling units including single family homes and a small squatting community.  Beetham Gardens is made up of low to middle income families living permanently.  

Beetham Gardens is made up of approximately 3,258 persons.  The majority (76.8%) of the population is of African decent, while 15% are Mixed and 8% are of Indian decent.  With regard to religious beliefs; 36% of the population is Roman Catholic, 19% Baptist, and 16% are Anglican.  39% of the total population are young people between the ages of 7 – 24 years.

The union status of females in this community shows that 13% are married, 21% never had a husband or a partner, 26% are in common-law relationships and 12% are no longer living with a husband or common-law partner.  In the general community; 76% of residents have never been married, 13% are married and 2% are divorced.  

There is one pre-school and one primary/secondary school in Beetham Gardens.  Approximately thirty (30%) percent of residents have had 5 years of schooling while only  25% attended school for 7 years or more.   The highest level of education attained by residents in Beetham Gardens is Primary school education (52%) followed by 30% attaining a Secondary school level of education.  Although members of the community have attended school, 75% of residents have never passed an exam.  Of persons who attended school, 4% received 1 – 2 O level subjects, 2% received 3 – 4 O level subjects,  and 1% received 5 subjects and over.

In 2000 training was undertaken by 466 (14%) community residents and included Vocational/Trade (28%), On the Job training (26%), Technical Institute (6%), Secondary School (7%) and University (.6%).  Of the training received 317 (68%) of residents completed the training.  Of this number 53% received a certificate with an examination and 9% received a certificate without an examination.

The population of school aged (7 – 12 years) children of Beetham Gardens currently attending school is 416 persons or 13% of residents.  

There are 11 business places inclusive of small parlors attached to homes, auto body shop, and a restaurant.  One thousand, two hundred and forty-three (1243) persons make up the work force in the community.  Fifty-one percent (51%) are employed in a private enterprise, 18% are no paid help and 12% are employed within the government.  

The majority of the workforce (41%) is employed in elementary occupations, 16% are in craft and related occupations and 15% are hired under Service and Sales occupations.  The industries mostly hiring members from this community are wholesale and retail (25%) followed by construction which employs 14% of community members.  Eight (8%) percent are employed in personal ad household type of jobs.

This community is comprised of low to middle income families.  Thirty-six percent (36%) of community members earn less than $500  per month, 18% earn between $1,000-$1,999, and 8% receive between $2,000-$2,999. Three (3%) percent of the population earn more that $5,000 per month.

Youth Activities
Beetham Gardens has a number of recreational facilities including football fields and a basketball court, and a Police Youth Club. These facilities are often utilized by the youths and other residents of the community.
