Cocorite Community Profile
Cocorite is located in the northern part of Trinidad, North West of downtown Port-of-Spain. To the East are Fort George Rd, Western Main Rd, Link Rd and Audrey Jeffers Highway. To the South is an imaginary line from Audrey Jeffers Highway to and along the Sea Coast. This community is accessed via the Western Main Rd. Cocorite consists of the Waterhole and Powder Magazine communities.
Cocorite is a residential area with 1,365 households and a total population of 4,058 . The Cocorite area also comprises of the Water Hole and Powder Magazine communities. The Cocorite Community has a larger Afro-Trinidadian population with 74%. The age group of the youth population 7-24 represents 38% of the population. The majority of residents (30%) are Roman Catholic there are Anglicans, Presbyterians, Hindus, Muslims, Baptists, Jehovah Witness and Methodists. In this community there are a higher number of women who have never been married 33% as compared to couples 21% or to Common-Law relationships which make up only 17%.
There is a Government Primary School in the immediate area but the youth have to leave the community to attend Secondary School. The majority of the population has attended school with 46% having Secondary Schooling as the highest level, however out of this group 72% did not pass any exam. Obtaining 3-4 O’Levels and 5 & over O’Levels were equal in the next highest level of education with 6% of the population achieving this. Of those who did some level of training 51% have a certificate with an exam. The 7-12 age groups make up 38% of those attending school.
The workforce of Cocorite is 1,864 persons; this represents 78% of the working population. Of this group the majority work in private enterprise (61%) followed by those who work for the Government (25%). The major occupation of the working population is Elementary with 27%, while the major industry is the Wholesale and Retail Trade that makes up 18% of all Industries. 39% of the population earns less than $500. This is followed by 19% who earn $1,000 - $1,999.
There is a recreational field in the community however there seems to be a contention for the use of this field with those who live in South Cocorite and those who live in North Cocorite. A community center does exist on the northern side of the community; a play park has also been newly built on the northern side but currently not in use. The George Bovell III swimming facility is also in the process of being constructed in Cocorite.
