Covigne Road Community Profile

Location
Covigne  is located in the northern part of Trinidad, North West of downtown Port-of-Spain. To the East is the Diego Martin Main Road.  To the south is Dillon Street then an imaginary line to the Crest of the Hills. To the West of this community is also the Crest of the Hills. This community is accessed via the Crystal Stream Highway, Morne Coco Road or Diego Martin Main Road.
 

Population
Covigne Road is a residential area with 1,138 households and a total population of 3,611 . The Covigne Road Community has a larger Afro-Trinidadian population with 74%. The age group of the youth population 7-24 represents 36% of the population. The majority of residents are Roman Catholic (49%) there are also Anglicans, Presbyterians, Hindus, Muslims, Baptists, Jehovah Witness and Methodists. In this community there are a slightly higher number of women who have never been married 31% as compared to couples 28% or to Common-Law relationships which make up only 12%.
 

Education
There is a Government Primary School in the immediate area but the youth have to leave the community to attend Secondary School. The majority of the population has attended school with 49% having Secondary Schooling as the highest level, however out of this group 59% did not pass any exam. Obtaining 3-4 O’Levels was the next highest level of education with 9% of the population achieving this. Of those who did some level of training 50% have a certificate with an exam. The 7-12 age group makes up 34% of those attending school.
 

Economy
The workforce of Covigne Road is 1,600 persons; this represents 75% of the working population. Of this group the majority work in private enterprise (61%) followed by those who work for the Government (25%). The major occupation of the working population is Elementary with 20%, followed closely by Craft and Related with 19% while the major industry is the Wholesale and Retail Trade that makes up 15% of all Industries. 34% of the population earns less than $500. Those who earn $1,000 - $1,999 make up 13%.
 

Youth Activities
In the community the youth play football in an area called the ‘Tank Yard’.The only other sporting facility in the community is a basketball court. There is presently no Community Center in Covigne Road.
