Enterprise Community Profile


Enterprise is located in Central Trinidad and is bordered on the North by Dass Trace, Southern Main Road, Longdenville Road and Penn Trace; on the South by Clovis Avenue, Railway line, Edwin Trace, Lamont Extension Road and Warden Road; to the East by Ghendiah River, Ragoonanan Road and Longdenville Road; and to the West by Enterprise Road, Richard Lane, Datsunville Trace, Chrissie Trace Extension and Montrose Crown Trace. The community is comprised of 3,197 dwelling units including single family homes and a large squatting community. Enterprise is made up of low to middle income families living permanently as well as transient families.

Enterprise is made up of approximately 10,871 ethnically, culturally and economically diverse persons. The majority (49%) of the population is of African decent, while 31% are Indian and 19% are of mixed decent. With regard to religious beliefs; 20% of the population is Roman Catholic, 17% Hindu, and 13% are Spiritual Baptist. 39% of the total population are young people between the ages of 7 – 24 years.

Residents indicate that Enterprise has many occurrences of teenage pregnancy and female-headed single parent homes. The union status of females in this community shows that 29% are married, 26% never had a husband or a partner, 13% are in common-law relationships and 12% are no longer living with a husband or common-law partner. In the general community; 53% of residents have never been married, 34% are married and 2% are divorced.

There are four pre-schools and two primary schools in Enterprise. Approximately half of the residents possess formal Primary or Secondary school education; twenty-nine (29%) percent of whom have had 5 years of schooling while only 20% attended school for 7 years or more. The highest level of education attained by residents in Enterprise is Primary school education (45%) followed by 38% attaining a Secondary school level of education. Although members of the community have attended school, 68% of residents have never passed an exam. Of persons who attended school, 7% received 3 – 4 O level subjects and 6% received 5 subjects and over.

In 2000 training was undertaken by 2592 (24%) community residents and included On the Job training (34%), Vocational/Trade (11%), Technical Institute (5%), Secondary School (8%) and University (4%). Of the training received 1900 (73%) of residents completed the training. Of this number 41% received a certificate with an examination and 7% received a certificate without an examination.

The population of school aged (7 – 12 years) children of Enterprise currently attending school is 1313 persons or 12 % of residents.

There are 334 business places inclusive of small parlors attached to homes, supermarkets, mini-marts, auto body and tire shops, restaurants, hardware supply stores, and variety stores. Four thousand, Six hundred and three (4603) persons make up the work force in the community. Forty-nine (49%) is employed in a private enterprise, 20% are no paid help and 11% within the government.

The majority of the workforce (25%) is employed in craft and related occupations, 21% are in elementary occupations and 16% are hired under Service and Sales occupations. The industries mostly hiring members from this community are wholesale and retail (21%) followed by construction which employs 17% of community members. Eleven (11%) percent are employed in social and related type of jobs.

This community is comprised of low to middle income families. Thirty-nine (39%) of community members earn less than $500 per month, 18% earn between $1,000-$1,999, and 10% receive between $2,000-$2,999. Four (4%) percent of the population earn more that $5,000 per month.

Youth Activities
Enterprise has a number of recreational facilities including a pan yard, bandstands, football fields and a basketball court. These facilities are often utilized by the youths and other residents of the community. A community complex has also been established on Africa Grounds.
